“Throwing your body into the fight”: this phrase from film-maker Pier Paolo Pasolini, a firm favourite with the choreographers Emio Greco and Pieter Scholten, is particularly appropriate for their first creation as directors of the Ballet National de Marseille.

How can classical ballet be turned into a playground, or rather a battlefield, where the individual and the group meet? Loosely inspired by Elias Canetti’s literary masterpiece “Crowds and Power”, the new work “Le corps du Ballet National de Marseille” is in a way a (first) portrait of the company under Greco and Scholten: a group in which the power of each dancer’s body is promoted to enhance the potential of the whole.
