China’s rulers aren’t exactly enamoured of the topics ‘recalcitrant’ choreographer Wen Hui broaches in her work: the great famine, the terrors of Mao’s ‘Cultural Revolution’, sex and pregnancy. Wen Hui’s Living Dance Studio is the People’s Republic of China’s first independent contemporary dance. It is tolerated by the turning of a blind eye.
With dance, text and old and new film footage, Wen Hui documents the social phenomena of the past and present.
